The Agpath Lab recently hosted an engaging composting workshop led by Dr. Mary Cole, where participants had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of composting and its critical role in sustainable agriculture. The workshop brought together a diverse group of attendees, including Ellen, Graeme, Georgina, and Reza, all eager to learn from Dr. Cole’s extensive expertise.
The day began with an informative session in the lab, where participants gathered to listen to Dr. Cole discuss the principles of composting, soil health, and the science behind turning organic waste into nutrient-rich compost. The atmosphere was one of curiosity and enthusiasm as Dr. Cole shared her knowledge, answering questions and encouraging discussion.
Following the indoor session, the group moved outside to get hands-on experience turning the compost pile. Under Dr. Cole’s guidance, the participants learned the proper techniques for managing compost to ensure optimal decomposition and nutrient content. This practical experience was invaluable, providing the attendees with the skills they need to apply composting techniques on their own farms or gardens.
The workshop also included time in the lab, where participants used microscopes to examine the microorganisms at work in the compost. This close-up view of the microscopic life that drives the composting process offered a deeper appreciation of the complex interactions within the soil.
A particularly memorable moment of the day was when Reza took a break to sit with one of the farm’s puppies, Lizzy. The scene was a perfect blend of learning and enjoyment, capturing the spirit of the workshop.
After the workshop, the group had the chance to unwind and reflect on the day’s activities at Cannibal Creek Winery. Joined by winemaker Pat, Dr. Cole and the participants relaxed with a glass of wine, enjoying the beautiful surroundings and each other’s company. It was a fitting end to a day filled with learning, connection, and a shared passion for sustainable farming practices.
