Drouin Secondary College June 2017

Agpath had the pleasure of hosting students from Drouin Secondary College, giving them a unique opportunity to step into the world of soil science and plant pathology. Among the students were Jordan, a local from Drouin, Rick, an international student from Thailand, and Nour, another international student from Dubai. Together, they spent an exciting day in the lab, guided by Dr. Mary Cole and the Agpath team.

From the moment they entered the lab, the students were eager to learn and participate in the various activities that make up a day at Agpath. Dr. Mary Cole, along with lab staff Heli and Anita, provided them with hands-on experience in examining soil and plant samples under the microscope.

One of the highlights of the day was when the students got to see the microscopic world hidden within the soil. Under the careful guidance of Dr. Cole, Jordan, Rick, and Nour observed microorganisms and pathogens, gaining insights into the critical role these tiny entities play in agriculture.

The students also had the chance to work with various lab equipment, learning how samples are processed and analyzed. This experience allowed them to see firsthand how science is applied in real-world agricultural practices.

For Nour, a special moment was trying on a brand-new pair of gumboots, perfect for navigating the lab and the field. This simple yet essential piece of gear is a symbol of the practical, hands-on nature of the work done at Agpath.

Throughout the day, the students engaged in lively discussions with Dr. Cole, Heli, and Anita, asking questions and sharing their thoughts on what they were learning. These interactions were invaluable, providing the students with a deeper understanding of the importance of soil health and plant pathology.

As the day came to a close, Jordan, Rick, and Nour left the Agpath lab with a newfound appreciation for the science behind agriculture. The experience not only enhanced their knowledge but also sparked their curiosity and interest in the field of sustainable farming.
